This week’s RIAC - Motorsport Ireland classic video from the RPM Motorsport collection is highlights from the 1997 Rally of the Lakes. Having gone close on a number of occasions in 1996, Liam O’Callaghan continued his quest for a maiden international win in 1997. The Rally of Lakes was an event he had performed strongly on in the past and blasted into a commanding lead. With only 5 stages left, O’Callaghan led by over a minute but a puncture on the Caragh Lake stage caused him to retire after it damaged the suspension on his Toyota Celica. That left Austin McHale in a perfect position to steal in and take his first Killarney win since 1988. This programme will be available to stream below from 7pm on April 21st. Next week’s upload will see more Rally of the Lakes highlights as we jump forward 5 years to 2002.

This week’s RIAC - Motorsport Ireland classic video from the RPM Motorsport collection is highlights from the 2002 Circuit of Ireland. Following the tragic losses of Bertie Fisher and Frank Meagher and a Foot and Mouth Disease enforced hiatus, the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship resumed in 2002 with the Circuit of Ireland and a new base, Enniskillen. Andrew Nesbitt was at the peak of his powers around this time and he dominated the event behind the wheel of a P2000 Subaru Impreza WRC to win by over 2 and a half minutes. It was to be start of a devastatingly dominant season for the Armagh driver and his co-driver James O’Brien. This programme will be available to stream below from 7pm on April 14th. Next week’s upload will see highlights from the 1997 running of the Rally of the Lakes.

The 1997 Irish Super Prix entry list was headed by the 1996 winner Johan Rajamaki but he faced stiff competition from a strong grid of Boss Series regulars in their ex-Formula One, Formula 3,000 and other Libre cars. Nigel Greensall in his Tyrell took pole but slid off on the first corner. With Rajamaki and Tony Worswick fighting for the lead, Scottish driver Ron Cummings (who had difficulties in qualifying) scythed his way though the field to catch and pass the leaders in his Judd V10 powered Footwork and take the chequered flag. Greensall eventually fought back to 4th place, claiming a new Mondello Park lap record in the process. Next week’s upload will see more Circuit of Ireland highlights, this time from 2002 when Andrew Nesbitt was the peak of his powers.
