This week’s RIAC - Motorsport Ireland classic video from the RPM Motorsport collection is highlights from the 1997 Ulster Rally. With the 1997 Irish Tarmac Rally Championship already decided, the focus on the Ulster Rally was firmly on the F2 runners in the British Rally Championship. Heading to the Ulster, Mark Higgins was very much the outsider in the title race. Having never won a round of the British Championship, he wasn’t event in the top 5 on the points table heading to the penultimate round in his Nissan Sunny, a car which was much less developed than its counterparts, especially from Ford and Renault. Higgins drove a superb rally taking a comfortable win and hauling himself into title contention. This programme will be available to stream below from 7pm on August 11th. This week’s RIAC - Motorsport Ireland classic video from the RPM Motorsport collection is highlights from the 1997 Lurgan Park Rally. Having come within 4 seconds of the win of the 1996 event, Patrick Snijers returned in 1997 to try and claim the Lurgan Park Rally title. But it was fellow Escort WRC driver Gwyndaf Evans with guest navigator John McIlroy who made the early running, opening up a 9 second advantage after 5 stages. A spin for Gwyndaf allowed Snijers to draw level though and the pair headed into the final stage on equal time. Snijers and Evans set identical times on the final stage but Evans won on countback by virtue of having the most fastest times throughout the day. This programme will be available to stream below from 7pm on August 4th. Remember to subscribe to the Motorsport Ireland–RIAC YouTube Channel to be notified of our latest video uploads.
