Knockhill in Scotland hosted two such events, the UK Rally Challenge and the Michelin Nations Cup. Both events returned strong results for Irish crews with a podium lockout in the Challenge event and a team win in the Nations Cup. This programme will be available to stream below from 7pm on July 29th. Next week’s upload will feature highlights from the 1996 Ulster Rally.

Opels, Alfas, Peugeots, Hondas, and Renaults filled the grids of Mondello, Kilkistown and the Phoenix Park all season as Gordon Kellett, Michael Cullen, Jonathan Fildes and Joe Foley battled it out for the 1996 title. The popular Dungarvan Hillclimb had been included in the Irish Hillclimb Championship for many years, but for 1996, the event also became a counting round of the FIA European Hillclimb Challenge. Unfortunately, the event’s new found status didn’t bring any continental competitors but it did serve up a high class field of home grown talents such as Karl Cleary, Jenny Kennedy, Padraig Forde, Norman Kittle and Richard Young, all of whom were trying to break the 57.6 second barrier to become the first driver to average 100mph over the hill. This programme will be available to stream below from 7pm on July 8th. Next week’s upload will feature highlights from the 1996 Ypres Rally where the RPM cameras journeyed to the continent to follow the progress of Liam O’Callaghan and James O’Brien in their Toyota Celica GT4.

This week’s Motorsport Ireland – RIAC classic video from the RPM Motorsport collection is highlights from the 1996 Lurgan Park Rally. Kenny McKinstry headed into the 1996 Lurgan Park Rally chasing his eight win on the event. Being familiar with the event, McKinstry took RPM and UTV presenter Pamela Ballentine as his co-driver for the day but they were to face stiff opposition from James Cullen and Frank Meagher as well as former Belgian and European Champion, Patrick Snijers. Snijers, who would go on to compete in the event five more times in the coming years, put up a stunning display of car control but it wasn’t enough to catch McKinstry and Ballantine, who prevailed by 4 seconds in the ex Bertie Fisher Subaru Legacy. This programme will be available to stream below from 7pm on July 1st. Next week’s upload will feature highlights from the 1996 Dungarvan Hillclimb
