This week’s RIAC - Motorsport Ireland classic video from the RPM Motorsport collection is highlights from the 1997 Rally of the Lakes. Having gone close on a number of occasions in 1996, Liam O’Callaghan continued his quest for a maiden international win in 1997. The Rally of Lakes was an event he had performed strongly on in the past and blasted into a commanding lead. With only 5 stages left, O’Callaghan led by over a minute but a puncture on the Caragh Lake stage caused him to retire after it damaged the suspension on his Toyota Celica. That left Austin McHale in a perfect position to steal in and take his first Killarney win since 1988. This programme will be available to stream below from 7pm on April 21st. Next week’s upload will see more Rally of the Lakes highlights as we jump forward 5 years to 2002.
