This week’s RIAC- Motorsport Ireland classic video from the RPM Motorsport collection is highlights from the 1997 Inistioge Hillclimb. With the 2022 Alekto Irish Hillclimb and Sprint Championship beginning this weekend, we head back 25 years to the opening round of the 1997 championship which took place at Inistioge, Co. Kilkenny. A hugely popular venue during the 90s, the picturesque village of Inistioge provided a perfect backdrop as a huge variety of machinery tackled the challenging course. This RPM report covers all 7 classes from the event where veteran Ronnie Maybin proved to be the class of the field in his Delta T80. This programme will be available to stream below from 7pm on March 24th. Next week’s upload will see highlights from the 1997 Circuit of Ireland Rally and one of Bertie Fisher’s finest hours.

Since 1977 Saint Patrick’s Weekend and Clonakilty have been synonymous with the West Cork Rally. The event always proves popular with UK entrants and its 20th anniversary running in 1997 proved no exception, with over 50 crews making the journey across the Irish Sea. Former winners of the event John Price and Bob Fowden were the top seeds with local driver Frank O’Mahony out to try and claim a home win. As Price and O’Mahony faltered, Fowden pulled clear to second West Cork Rally win. This programme will be available to stream below from 7pm on March 17th. Next week’s upload will see highlights from the 1997 Inistiogue Hillclimb.

By 1992, Frank Meagher had long proven his pace in outdated machinery but despite having led many Irish Tarmac Rally Championship rounds, he had never won one. Despite having moved up to a Group A Sierra Cosworth in 1991, technology had moved on and with rivals Kenny McKinstry, Bertie Fisher and Austin McHale all now in 4 wheel drive cars, Meagher in the 2 wheel drive Sierra was once again, against the odds. However, over 4 days and 400 competitive miles, anything was possible…. This programme will be available to stream below from 7pm on March 3rd. Next week’s upload will see 2002 circuit racing action from the RT2000 class.
