This week’s RIAC - Motorsport Ireland classic video from the RPM Motorsport collection is highlights from the 2002 Jim Clark Rally. 2002 saw the Irish Tarmac Championship include a round in Scotland for the first time. With British and Irish Championship rules somewhat aligned, in addition to the Manx and the Ulster, the Jim Clark Rally now provided a third opportunity for the top crews in each series to go directly up against each other. New territory for almost all entered, it was Derek McGarrity who led at the end of opening day with Andrew Nesbitt over a minute adrift in fourth. Propshaft failure for McGarrity put him out early on day 2 as Nesbitt scythed his way to the front of the field to win by over 2 and a half minutes. With plans to grow through the 90s, ALMC moved their rally to Co. Laois in 1996 and by 1997 had set about raising the profile of the event with a high profile launch in Dublin Castle and entries from Austin McHale and Bertie Fisher to compliment the strong field of regular National Championship contenders. McHale proved untouchable, while Fisher (who was trying a left hand drive car for the first time) eventually clawed up to second place at the expense of Hugh Martin Doherty who proved to be the best of the rest. This week’s Motorsport Ireland – RIAC classic video from the RPM Motorsport collection is highlights from a trio of Fiat races from 2002. Fiat’s involvement with Irish saloon car racing was arguably never as good as it was in 2002. With three classes to choose from, the Fiat Uno Dunlop Challenge, the Fiat Punto Dunlop Challenge and the Fiat Punto Abarth Challenge all provided full grids and close racing for a relatively modest outlay. This week’s upload provides highlights from each of the three classes in three action packed Mondello Park races. This programme will be available to stream below from 7pm on May 5th.
