​This week’s RIAC - Motorsport Ireland classic video from the RPM Motorsport collection is highlights from the 1996 Irish Formula Opel Championship.
Ireland’s premier single seater class in the 90s provided a thrilling championship battle in 1996. This season roundup contains highlights from 5 of the 10 rounds covering rounds in Mondello, Phoenix Park and Kirkistown. By the mid-way point of the season, Michael Edgar appeared to be the championship favourite as he aimed for his 3rd championship victory in 5 years, but a non-finish caused by a multi car collision in Kirkistown brought Derek Cunneely right into the championship fray. The scene was set for a title showdown in the final round at Mondello Park where Edgar and Cunneely would go head to head for the title. Despite Edgar’s best attempts however, Cunneely managed to fend him off in a spectacular wheel to wheel battle to claim the championship by 3 points.

As social distancing guidelines are still in place in the RIAC office, we would appreciate if payments could be made online, by bank transfer, post, or over the phone.

This week’s RIAC- Motorsport Ireland classic video from the RPM Motorsport collection is highlights from the 1996 Dunlop Fiat Uno Challenge.
The Fiat Uno Challenge was an extremely popular racing class in the 90s offering competitive racing on an affordable budget. The 1996 season saw full grids and lots of action as Mark Turley, Roy McShane and Graham McClintock battled it out for the title. As the season began to draw to a close, Turley surged to the front of the points as he kept out of trouble to take the title.
