The brainchild of RPM’s own Alan Tyndall, the four day Belfast City Millennium Motorsport Festival included a motorsports market, a gala evening, autotests, stunt riders and over 500 vehicles taking part in parades and static displays but the major attraction of the weekend was the festival hillclimb event at Stormont Castle which featured a jaw dropping array of vehicles and drivers including Sterling Moss, Giacomo Agostini, Eddie Irvine, Derek Daly, John Watson, Tommy Byrne, Martin Donnelly, Jimmy McRae as well as then current F1 star Jarno Trulli who attended with Jordan Grand Prix Team and the Honda/Mugen powered Jordan 199. This week’s RIAC - Motorsport Ireland classic video from the RPM Motorsport collection is action from the three-day 1990 Circuit of Ireland with reporting from Alan Tyndall, Gary Gillespie, and George Hamilton. David Llewellin was on the crest of a wave in the late 80s and early 90’s but the reigning British Rally Champion faced a tough challenge on the 1990 Circuit of Ireland with Malcolm Wilson and a young Colin McRae looking to topple the Welsh man. There was as ever, a strong local contingent with Austin McHale, Bertie Fisher, James Cullen, Kenny McKinstry and Richard Smyth looking to cause an upset against the professionals. Changeable conditions played into Llewellin’s hands however as his four-wheel drive Toyota Celica began to pull away from the opposition and he claimed his second Circuit win in five years with some spectacular driving along the way. This programme will be available to stream below from 7pm on Christmas Eve: Next week’s final upload of 2020 will feature highlights of the Belfast City Millennium Motorsport Festival where a spectacular array of machinery tackled the hill at Stormont.

This week’s RIAC - Motorsport Ireland classic video from the RPM Motorsport collection is action from the 2000 Dunlop Rally of Ireland. A unique one-off event which featured the first section of a special stage held indoors in Ireland, the Dunlop Rally of Ireland was run by ALMC Motor Club. Utilising terrain in Dublin, Wicklow and Laois, the event took in some classic stages, but pre-event favourite Austin McHale had early dramas when a collision on the road section to the opening stage left him languishing in 133rd and last position. It took all his guile and experience to work his way back to the front to take the win, helped in no small part by the demise of Eamonn Boland and turbo issues for Peadar Hurson. This programme will be available to stream below from 7pm on Thursday, December 17th. Next week’s Christmas Eve upload will feature full highlights from the 1990 Circuit of Ireland.

Having being established in 1999, by the following year the RT2000 class had established itself and one of the most competitive and spectacular tin top series on the island of Ireland. After a season long battle, the title decider in the millennium year boiled down to a straight fight between John Whelan and Brendan Donegan with Donegan starting on pole.
