This week’s Motorsport Ireland – RIAC classic video from the RPM Motorsport collection is highlights from the 1997 Stonethrowers Rally. With local hero and eventual nine time winner of the event Frank Meagher relegated to safety car duties, the 1997 Stonethrowers Rally provided a very open contest between the contenders for that year’s Irish National Rally Championship. Michael Barrable, John Gillece and Frank O’Mahoney, all in different marques of Group A four wheel drive cars, were the undoubted favourites but in dry conditions, drivers in ageing machinery such as Charlie Donnelly, Ray Breen and Derek Smith were also to feature. This week’s RIAC - Motorsport Ireland classic video from the RPM Motorsport collection is highlights from the 1997 Ford of Ireland Formula Ford Zetec Championship. The Zetec class was introduced to Ireland in 1997 with backing from Ford of Ireland to the tune of £15,000 and such was the interest that 22 drivers signed up the series. Included in this upload are highlights from the season opener in Kirkistown, round 6 in Mondello and the Festival meeting also at Mondello. Noel Dunne eventually won the title following a titanic year-long battle with Mark McKenna and Jeff Wright. This programme will be available to stream below from 7pm on July 7th. This week’s Motorsport Ireland – RIAC classic video from the RPM Motorsport collection is highlights from the 2002 Manx International Rally. Three British Rally Championship titles probably belied the motorsport talent that was Mark Higgins. The Manx native never got the big break of a full time seat with a works team in the World Championship but on his home event, he was untouchable. Trying to place himself in the shop window of the factory teams, Higgins hired a Toyota Corolla WRC for his home event in 2002. Andrew Nesbitt, who was in the form of his life, could only manage second place to Higgins who finished almost 5 minutes ahead after a devastating performance. This week’s Motorsport Ireland – RIAC classic video from the RPM Motorsport collection is highlights from the 1992 Manx International Rally. Already well on his way to becoming a household name, Colin McRae was in a class of his own in 1992 winning every round of that year’s British Rally Championship. In a head to head encounter with the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship regulars on the Isle of Man, McRae was happy to alter his pace as needed and despite driving well within himself, brought his Subaru Legacy to a 6 minute win over the similar car of second place Bertie Fisher with Kenny McKinstry in third place in another Legacy. This programme will be available to stream below from 7pm on June 23rd. Remember to subscribe to the Motorsport Ireland–RIAC YouTube Channel to be notified of our latest video uploads.

This week’s Motorsport Ireland – RIAC classic video from the RPM Motorsport collection is highlights from the 1992 Donegal International Rally. After a tough start to his 1992 Irish Tarmac Rally Championship campaign, Bertie Fisher was looking to turn his fortunes around on the Donegal International Rally. Not his luckiest event, Fisher was initially outpaced by fellow Subaru Legacy driver Kenny McKinstry on the opening day but on Saturday Fisher began to show his class and pulled clear with a devastating performance. McKinstry picked up punctures and penalties as he tried in vain to stay with the Ballinamallard driver who went on to claim his second win on the event. This week’s RIAC - Motorsport Ireland classic video from the RPM Motorsport collection is highlights from the 2002 Jim Clark Rally. 2002 saw the Irish Tarmac Championship include a round in Scotland for the first time. With British and Irish Championship rules somewhat aligned, in addition to the Manx and the Ulster, the Jim Clark Rally now provided a third opportunity for the top crews in each series to go directly up against each other. New territory for almost all entered, it was Derek McGarrity who led at the end of opening day with Andrew Nesbitt over a minute adrift in fourth. Propshaft failure for McGarrity put him out early on day 2 as Nesbitt scythed his way to the front of the field to win by over 2 and a half minutes.
